While making rice at home may seem straightforward, it can often turn out too sticky or stodgy because too much starch is left on the grains. Another reason rice can fail is incorrect water ratios or lifting the lid during cooking.
I've struggled to make fluffy rice for years, but after testing recipes, I've found one that works for me. It serves two to three people, but quantities can easily be doubled or halved. What's more, the rice is ready in under 20 minutes, perfect for a quick and easy dinner.
Two cups of rice
One teaspoon of salt
Four cups of water
Method:Start by measuring out your rice into a saucepan; the standard portion for one person is between half a cup and one cup. You can also choose different varieties, but I used long-grain for this recipe.
Next, rinse the rice in cold water until it runs clear. This is extremely important because it removes excess starch, which can make it turn stodgy.
Once clear, it's time to add water to the pot. I use a 1:2 ratio as this is perfect for my saucepan, and the water is about half an inch above the rice.
Next, bring the water to a boil, and once at a boil, turn the heat down to a simmer and simmer for seven minutes.
Make sure not to remove the lid at any point, then turn the heat completely off before popping a kitchen towel under the lid and placing it back on top.
Leave the rice to steam for eight to 10 minutes; mine took 10. After the extra 10 minutes, you'll have delicious, fluffy rice.
This recipe works for me every time and works perfectly with a variety of meals.
