Senegal’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup are gaining momentum as the Lions of Teranga gear up for their second major international competition within a year.

The Senegal national team is steadily assembling a formidable squad ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

After going unbeaten in their qualification campaign for the 2026 World Cup, Senegal have confirmed their place in three consecutive editions of the tournament. Their impressive run included a memorable victory over England during the summer.

The event, which will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, could mark the final chapter for Senegal’s celebrated ‘golden generation’. Several of their senior stars may not be at the same level by 2030. Although they may not enter the 2026 tournament as favourites, Senegal still boast one of the most balanced and talented squads participating.

At the forefront of this group remains Sadio Mane, who currently plays for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. The 34-year-old forward is expected to gradually step away from international football following the tournament.

During Mane’s tenure, Senegal reached two Africa Cup of Nations finals and lifted the trophy in 2022 — the nation’s first-ever continental triumph. His success came with vital contributions from teammates Kalidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy, both currently playing in Saudi Arabia, who are also approaching the twilight of their careers. Thus, the 2026 edition represents a significant milestone for this generation.

Despite the looming transition, Senegal’s future remains promising with a new wave of emerging talent. Tottenham Hotspur’s Pape Matar Sarr, Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye, and Bayern Munich’s Nicolas Jackson — all under 25 — bring energy and creativity to the side.
