India had a rusty start against England in the first T20I in Chester-le-Street after they lost two back-to-back wickets, including Ishan Kishan's. Winning the toss, the Indian captain Shreyas Iyer decided to bat first. And before they could settle, India lost two.

While Sanju Samson was caught out, Ishan's wicket succumbed to a nasty miscommunication, leaving his partner Abhishek Sharma stranded in shock. This happened in the second over when Kishan tapped a delivery toward the wide mid-on with soft hands.

Believing there was an easy single, Kishan immediately called for the run and sprinted down the pitch. He was nearly halfway across before looking at his partner.

However, Abhishek, on the other side, was looking at the ball, so was Kishan. Before Abhishek realized anything, Kishan was halfway down the pitch. And Abhishek sent him back.

Ishan attempted to turn around and scramble back to the striker's end. However, England captain and wicketkeeper Jos Buttler cleanly collected the throw and whipped off the bails well before Kishan could make his ground.

Abhishek, Iyer Shine Before Rain Intervenes

Despite the early loss, Abhishek Sharma took charge anchored by a much-needed half-century of captain Shreyas Iyer. India slipped to 6/2 inside two overs after Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan departed cheaply, but Abhishek counterattacked with a sensational 59 off just 24 balls, reaching his fifty in only 20 deliveries.

He stitched a 82-run third-wicket stand with Iyer, who played the perfect supporting role before accelerating to a composed 68 off 47 balls. Shivam Dube then provided the finishing flourish with an unbeaten 42 from 21 deliveries as India posted a competitive 189/7 in 20 overs.

Saqib Mahmood was England's standout bowler, returning figures of 3/33, while Sam Curran and Adil Rashid claimed a wicket each. India scored 61/2 in the powerplay, crossed 100 in 10.3 overs and added 39 runs in the final four overs.

However, all efforts went in vain. The rain, which had a consistent presence mostly as a drizzle, didn't allow the covers to come off. And this eventually forced the umpires to call it a washout.
