Mumbai: Continuous torrential rains in Maharashtra have badly affected life. Incidents like floods, waterlogging and landslides are being reported in many districts of the state. More than 10 people have died in weather- incidents. At the same time, there is a possibility of cloud burst like situation in Nashik. As a precaution, the famous Trimbakeshwar temple has also been temporarily closed.
Nashik Rural Police has appealed to the people and tourists to postpone traveling to the district for the time being. The administration has set up check posts in Igatpuri, Vadivharhe and Trimbakeshwar areas. On the instructions of the district administration, it was decided to keep Trimbakeshwar and Vani Mandir closed for Tuesday. Due to continuous rain, there is waterlogging in many areas of the city.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that the period of heavy rains may continue till July 8. He told that the entire government machinery has been put on high alert. The administration has been instructed to be fully prepared for relief and rescue operations.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange alert for many districts including Mumbai, Kolhapur, Satara, Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri. There is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in these areas.
Nearly 600 mm of rain was recorded in the last 24 hours in the Karjat-Lonavla Ghat area of the Mumbai-Pune route. Landslides occurred at 22 places in Pune district within two days. Roads were submerged in water in many areas, affecting the movement of people.
In view of the heavy rains, it has been decided to keep all government, private and municipal corporation run schools and colleges closed in Mumbai. At the same time, the missing link of Mumbai-Pune Expressway has been reopened after relief operations.
On the other hand, a part of the Mumbai-Goa Highway, which was closed due to landslides, is also gradually being opened for traffic. The administration is appealing to people to remain alert and follow weather advisories.
