Folarin Balogun, the United States striker, expressed his initial excitement about rejoining the team for their Round of 16 match against Belgium in the FIFA World Cup. However, he soon recognized that his return would stir considerable controversy due to a suspension stemming from a red card. The match against Belgium marked the end of the United States' World Cup journey, making them the last of the three co-hosts to exit the tournament, following Canada and Mexico.

Balogun's participation in the tournament was clouded by controversy after FIFA lifted the one-match suspension he received for a red card during the United States' 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32. Despite Belgium's challenge against this decision, FIFA upheld Balogun's eligibility for the match.

Balogun Discusses External Pressures

Balogun acknowledged that the external pressures surrounding his return were challenging to ignore and had an impact on the team's morale. He emphasized his efforts to concentrate on the game despite the distractions. "Initially, I was thrilled to be back, but upon reflection, I realized it would spark significant controversy, which made my teammates a bit anxious. As the game approached, I tried to maintain my focus, but it was tough due to the surrounding noise," Balogun stated.

"This was beyond my control, and while it was an unfortunate situation, it ultimately gave me confidence," he added.
