Wrong FASTag deductions remain a common concern for highway users in India. If extra toll has been deducted from your FASTag account, you may be entitled to a refund. A recent High Court ruling has further strengthened the position of consumers by reinforcing accountability for incorrect toll collections.
FASTag has made toll payments faster and more convenient, but cases of incorrect deductions continue to trouble many motorists. Vehicle owners have reported issues such as double toll charges, deductions without passing through a toll plaza and incorrect vehicle classification leading to higher toll fees.
Government data has also highlighted the scale of the issue. According to information shared in Parliament, 12.55 lakh FASTag transactions out of nearly 4.1 billion transactions in 2024 involved incorrect toll deductions.
In a written reply in Parliament, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari stated that the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) processed refunds for 17.66 lakh FASTag transactions between January and December 2025 after complaints related to incorrect toll deductions.
These refunds were issued after users raised valid grievances regarding excess toll charges.
A significant judgment by the Madhya Pradesh High Court has brought greater attention to consumer protection in FASTag-related disputes.
The case involved the Bhopal–Dewas Four-Lane Road, where a toll operator was found to have collected higher-than-permitted toll charges from three-axle buses through FASTag transactions. According to the case records, the excess collection amounted to more than ₹11 crore.
When the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation (MPRDC) introduced measures to recover the excess amount, the toll company challenged the action before the High Court.
However, the Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Vivek Rusia and Justice Pradeep Mittal dismissed the petition, allowing the recovery action to proceed.
The ruling is expected to strengthen consumer confidence in challenging incorrect toll deductions.
According to legal experts, the decision may:
Refund mechanisms for incorrect FASTag deductions already exist, but the judgment highlights the importance of timely correction of such errors.
Incorrect toll deductions may occur due to several reasons, including:
1. Double ScanningThe FASTag scanner may accidentally read the tag twice, resulting in duplicate deductions.
2. Wrong Vehicle ClassificationIf a vehicle is incorrectly classified—for example, a car being treated as a larger commercial vehicle—the toll charged may be higher than applicable.
3. Return Journey Discount Not AppliedAt certain toll plazas where return-trip concessions are available, technical issues may prevent the discount from being applied.
4. Technical or Software IssuesTemporary software glitches, network failures or system errors may sometimes result in incorrect toll transactions.
If you notice an incorrect FASTag deduction:
Prompt reporting generally helps speed up the verification and refund process.
Incorrect FASTag deductions can occur due to technical or operational reasons, but users have established grievance mechanisms to seek refunds. The recent Madhya Pradesh High Court ruling underscores the importance of accountability in toll collection and is expected to encourage stricter compliance with consumer protection norms. If you believe excess toll has been deducted from your FASTag account, report the issue without delay through the appropriate official channels.
