Sikkim Samardung Tunnel, Landslide: A major accident occurred on Monday after a landslide occurred in the Samardung Tunnel under construction in Mamring area of ​​South Sikkim. According to preliminary information, a landslide inside the tunnel caused a part to be blocked, due to which 12 to 20 workers are feared trapped inside. The tunnel is part of the Teesta Phase-VI Hydroelectric Project, which is being constructed by Patel Engineering.


After the accident, the possibility of gas leakage inside the tunnel has also been expressed, due to which relief and rescue operations have become more challenging. Teams from several agencies including Sikkim Police, fire and emergency services are engaged in rescue operations at the incident site. The authorities have also controlled traffic in the surrounding area so that the relief work is not affected. Meanwhile, some members of the rescue team, which arrived from West Bengal, allegedly fainted after being exposed to gas while trying to reach the workers trapped inside the tunnel, who have been admitted to a nearby hospital. At present, the administration has not officially confirmed the number and condition of the trapped workers, while the rescue operation is continuing.

According to initial reports, the incident occurred inside a tunnel built by Patel Engineering for the Teesta Phase-VI hydroelectric project. A portion of the tunnel collapsed or was blocked following a landslide, preventing workers from getting out.


Relief operation continues


Rescue operations are underway and personnel from Sikkim Police, fire and emergency services and other emergency agencies have been deployed at the site. Authorities are also controlling traffic in the area to facilitate rescue operations.


12-20 workers feared trapped


According to sources, members of a rescue team from West Bengal started feeling dizzy while attempting to reach the trapped workers and fainted, allegedly due to exposure to the gas. They were admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment. The exact number of stranded workers is not yet clear, with initial reports putting the number between 12 and 20. Authorities have not yet issued any formal confirmation about the number of workers trapped inside the tunnel or their condition.

Actually, Samardung Tunnel is part of the Teesta Phase-6 Hydroelectric Project under construction near Rangpo. Rescue teams are continuously trying to reach the trapped workers, while officials are keeping a close watch on the situation.
