Spanish authorities have checked the documents of more than 3,500 passengers arriving on 310 flights from Italy at major airports since temporary border controls were introduced on Aug. 8, according to the Interior Ministry data.
As of Friday, a week after the measure took effect, a total of 3,561 travelers had been required to present documentation upon arrival in Spain, according to Spanish daily newspaper ARA newspaper.
The measure, implemented by Spain’s Interior Ministry, will remain in effect until Sept. 7 following Italy’s suspension of Schengen arrangements for travelers arriving from Spain amid a migration dispute, Reuters reported.
However, some leading tourism insiders have warned that tighter border controls against Italian travelers could disrupt Spain’s tourism industry during the peak summer season, Democrat reported.
