Salaried employees have PF contributions deducted from their pay, but reducing this contribution could offer them significant relief. The government is considering certain changes to the EPF scheme.

If you are employed, a portion of your salary is likely deducted every month as a PF contribution. These funds help meet future financial needs. But would it be beneficial for you if the monthly amount deposited into your PF account were reduced or deferred for a certain period? The EPF scheme includes a provision allowing for adjustments to PF contributions under specific circumstances. Let’s look at what these potential changes entail.

What changes are expected?

Under the EPF scheme, the central government is authorized to modify PF contributions in certain situations. Specifically, the government could order a reduction in the employee's PF contribution or even defer the payment.

For instance, if ₹4,000 is currently deposited into your PF account each month, a change could result in only ₹2,000 being deposited, with the remaining ₹2,000 staying in your take-home salary.

Changes to be implemented only when necessary

It is important to note that these changes will not be implemented immediately; PF contributions will continue as usual for now. However, the government can invoke this provision if the need arises.

Under what circumstances will the change occur?

Such a change would be considered if the country faces a pandemic or a similar disaster, prompting the central government to modify PF contributions to provide financial relief to employees.

Will the change be permanent?

It is worth noting that this would not be a permanent change. If necessary, the government can reduce PF contributions or even order their deferral for a maximum period of three months.

Will only employees be affected?

According to reports, changes will not be limited to employees' PF contributions; the employer's contribution may also be modified.
