News Desk. Indian Railways has taken an important decision regarding retired employees. Railway Board has extended the period of re-appointment of retired employees on contract basis on need basis. Now this scheme will remain in force till 15 October 2028. In this regard, instructions have been issued by the Railway Board to all zonal railways and production units.

Earlier the arrangement was till 15 October 2026

Under the old rules, apart from the vacant non-gazetted posts in the Railways, there was a provision to hire retired employees on contract for paramedical posts in hospitals and dispensaries and posts like instructors and senior instructors in central training institutes. Its duration was to end on 15 October 2026.

Now the period has been extended for two years

After review by the Railway Board, it has been decided to continue this arrangement further. Now from October 15, 2026 to October 15, 2028, services of experienced retired railway workers can be availed if needed. However, re-appointment will be made only in exigent circumstances after proper investigation.

Rules will be different depending on pension

The rules to honorarium, allowances and leave of employees appointed on contract will be decided according to their pension system. For employees covered under OPS, the Finance Ministry's guidelines dated December 9, 2020 will be applicable, while in the case of NPS employees, the conditions will be decided as per the instructions dated October 18, 2023. Railway Board has also clarified that the remaining terms and conditions will remain applicable as before.
