Nagoya, Sept 26:

India’s Baranica Elangovan created history by winning a bronze medal in the women’s pole vault at the Asian Games on Friday, becoming the first Indian to win a medal in the event at the continental Games.

The 29-year-old Tamil Nadu athlete cleared 4.15 metres to finish joint third with Kazakhstan’s Polina Ivanova. Both athletes cleared 4.15m and had the same number of failures at 4.25m.

Japan’s Misaki Morota won the gold with a personal best clearance of 4.55m, while China’s Chunge Niu took silver after clearing 4.50m.

Baranica’s medal marks a significant milestone for Indian athletics, with the pole vault event producing the country’s first-ever Asian Games medal.
