Piers Morgan slams Portugal over Cristiano Ronaldo’s No. 7 shirt being handed to Rafael Leao

British broadcaster Piers Morgan has hit out at Portugal after Rafael Leao was handed Cristiano Ronaldo’s famous No. 7 shirt.

The incident took place following the forward’s departure from the national team camp.

Portugal confirmed that Leao would wear the No. 7 shirt for the Nations League matches against Denmark and Norway after Ronaldo left the squad,

Ronaldo’s departure allegedly comes amid tensions surrounding his playing time under head coach Jorge Jesus.

Piers reacted to the decision on X, questioning why Portugal was treating Ronaldo in such a way after everything the 41-year-old had done for the national team.

“After everything @Cristiano has done for Portugal, why the hell are they treating him like this? Yesterday was his father’s birthday, and he played for his country the day after his dad died,” Morgan wrote.

He added: “Shameful to see this shocking disrespect for their greatest player.”

However, the change was not necessarily a decision by Portugal to replace Ronaldo’s number permanently.

UEFA’s Nations League regulations require players in the matchday squad to be assigned numbers from 1 to 23.

In Ronaldo’s absence, Leao was therefore moved from No. 17 to No. 7, while Fábio Silva took Leao’s previous number.
