New Delhi,  Oct 12:

India pacer Mohammed Shami, who claimed four wickets for 30 runs in Bengal’s Ranji Trophy match against Delhi on Sunday, backed Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return to the national side while indirectly questioning why his own consistent performances have not earned him another India call-up.

Bhuvneshwar, 36, has been selected for India’s T20I tour of New Zealand following a productive run in the IPL. Shami said the swing bowler deserved the opportunity after delivering back-to-back performances.

“Bhuvi should have been picked a long time ago. He doesn’t talk to anyone. It doesn’t mean that you should stop a talent for a long time. It’s good for him,” Shami said.

When reminded that he too had been performing well, Shami responded sarcastically, “No, no, I’m not a good bowler.” He added that players who work hard and possess the required potential should receive opportunities.

Shami last represented India in early 2025 and was part of the team that won the ICC Champions Trophy in the UAE.  surface for its bowling strength.
