Nagpur: Lawyers staged protests outside the District Court and at Samvidhan Chowk against the alleged misconduct by Delhi Police towards senior advocate Shadan Farasat during a peaceful agitation. The protesters condemned the incident, warning that the suppression of lawyers and violation of fundamental rights would not be tolerated.

Farasat was detained during a protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Delhi. He alleged that police personnel tore his shirt and threw him into a moving bus. The incident triggered outrage among lawyers in Nagpur, who gathered to raise slogans against police action and criticise Central govt and the administration.

Addressing the protesters, advocate Nihalsinh Rathod said fundamental rights were being trampled upon, and the treatment meted out to Farasat reflected the alleged suppression of lawyers in the country.

“As lawyers, we are followers of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. Babasaheb fought more battles outside the courtroom than inside it. We, too, must now fight along the same path,” Rathod said, calling upon the legal fraternity to stand united in defence of constitutional rights.

Several lawyers participated in the demonstration, including former presidents of District Bar Association Kamal Satuja and Roshan Bagde, along with former general secretary Nitin Deshmukh.
