India will have a 17-member contingent, featuring 11 women and six men, competing across 11 sports at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal from October 31 to November 13.

Table tennis player Syndrela Das, badminton talent Tanvi Patri and swimmer Dhinidhi Desinghu are among the country's leading medal prospects at the fourth edition of the Summer Youth Olympics, which will be staged in Africa for the first time.

Das will take part in the women's singles table tennis competition, while Asian Under-17 badminton champion Patri will represent India in the women's singles event. Desinghu is entered in three swimming events: the women's 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 200m individual medley.

India's participation will span athletics, archery, badminton, beach wrestling, boxing, equestrian, judo, swimming, table tennis, windsurfing and wushu. The 17-athlete squad will be the country's smallest contingent at a Summer Youth Olympic Games.

The 2026 edition will be held across Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly over 15 days. Around 2,700 athletes are expected to compete in 25 sports for 153 medal events. Ten additional engagement sports will also be part of the programme, but will not offer medals.

Dakar 2026 will mark the first time an Olympic sporting event is held on African soil. The Games were initially scheduled for 2022 but were postponed by four years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The previous Summer Youth Olympics took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2018.

India have collected 23 medals across the three previous editions, comprising three gold, 16 silver and four bronze. The inaugural Games were held in Singapore in 2010, followed by Nanjing in China in 2014 and Buenos Aires in 2018.

Organised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Youth Olympic Games are designed for athletes primarily aged between 15 and 17. Alongside sporting competition, the event features educational and cultural programmes aimed at promoting Olympic values, participation and international understanding.

The 2026 sports programme includes athletics, swimming, breaking, skateboarding, beach handball, beach wrestling, futsal, coastal rowing, Baseball5 and Wushu Taolu, among others. Baseball5 and Wushu Taolu will make their Youth Olympic Games debut. Ten engagement sports, including golf, karate and surfing, will be held without medal events.
