Cyberpunk Edgerunners season 2 could have taken the world of Night City in an even more extreme direction. Studio Trigger reportedly pitched several ideas that raised concerns at CD Projekt Red (CDPR), the studio behind Cyberpunk 2077 . Some suggestions were so dramatic that they risked changing the foundations of the franchise. CDPR stepped in to protect the established lore, even as it gave the animation team room to experiment. The revelations have sparked fresh discussion about the creative decisions behind the Netflix series and how far its creators can go with an established gaming universe.
CDPR rejected Studio Trigger’s plans to destroy Night CityStudio Trigger is known for its bold animation style and willingness to push stories beyond conventional limits. However, that approach created some challenges while developing Cyberpunk Edgerunners season 2, which forms part of the official Cyberpunk 2077 universe.
In an interview, showrunner Bartosz Sztybor and executive producer Saya Elder discussed how the two creative teams handled disagreements. Sztybor revealed that Trigger repeatedly proposed ideas that could have changed major parts of the franchise.
“There are situations where Studio Trigger comes to us with an idea and [we respond], ‘No, I think that’s lore-breaking,’ Sztybor said. “Then Patrick Mills thinks about it and says, ‘This is weird, but maybe we can do something else… and this would work.’”
Elder also explained that CDPR tried to support creative freedom rather than reject every unusual suggestion.
“We try really hard not to say no to ideas,” Elder said. “We try to be more ‘Yes, and’ people. But a lot of ideas are so difficult to incorporate into the original lore."
Sztybor then offered a striking example of the discussions, revealing Trigger's repeated interest in destroying two major elements of the franchise.
“Always with Studio Trigger, it’s, ‘Can we destroy Arasaka and Night City?’ [Edgerunners 2], it’s the same. First week of working: ‘So, can we now destroy Night City and Arasaka?’" said Sztybor.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners season 2 raises questions about the franchise's futureThe discussions highlight the challenge of balancing an independent animated story with an established video game universe. Season 1 took place before the events of Cyberpunk 2077, while season 2 moved the timeline to 2078, allowing the creators to explore what happened after the game.
The second season also introduced powerful elements, particularly Capri's abilities and the enormous vehicle-based creature she assembled. These developments pushed the show's action to a new level and raised questions about how much power a character should hold within the franchise.
Meanwhile, CDPR is developing a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. Reports have suggested that the next game could explore Night City alongside a plague-affected version of Chicago, although official details remain limited.
Whether the sequel acknowledges season 2's biggest developments remains unclear. For now, CDPR's intervention shows that protecting the wider Cyberpunk universe remains a priority, even when creative teams want to take the story in unexpected directions.
