Bihar's Mokama MLA Anant Kumar Singh is facing fresh legal trouble after the Supreme Court overturned the bail granted to him in the murder case of Dularchand Yadav, a local strongman killed during the state's 2025 Assembly election campaign. The apex court has asked Singh to surrender before the authorities by December 1. A bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and PV Varale found fault with the Patna High Court's decision to release him on bail, pointing to the seriousness of the charges and his criminal antecedents.

The ruling adds to Singh's mounting troubles, with his political relationship with the ruling Janata Dal (United) also collapsing in recent days. The party has expelled him and his wife, Neelam Devi, for six years, citing "anti-party activities".

Anant Singh's political fallout with JD(U): What triggered his expulsion?

The dispute between Singh and the JD(U) leadership escalated during the Patna Graduates' constituency Legislative Council election. The Mokama MLA threw his weight behind Jan Suraaj candidate Anuj Kumar Singh, despite the ruling party fielding Neeraj Kumar as its official candidate.

Singh reportedly mobilised his supporters to campaign for the Jan Suraaj nominee. He also launched personal attacks against senior party functionaries and publicly questioned the way the organisation was being run.

The party eventually took disciplinary action against both Singh and Neelam Devi. JD(U) state president Umesh Singh Kushwaha announced their six-year expulsion.

Neelam Devi asked to vacate official bungalow in Patna

The consequences of the party's action extended to Neelam Devi's official privileges.

The Bihar government withdrew her position on the State-Level Programme Implementation Committee, along with her Minister of State rank and entitlement to government accommodation.

The Building Construction Department issued an eviction notice on October 26, 2026, asking her to vacate the official bungalow at 1, Mall Road in Patna.

The JD(U) has also moved Bihar Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar, requesting that Singh be disqualified as an MLA under the Anti-Defection Law and that his Assembly membership be terminated.

Dularchand Yadav murder: What happened during Bihar election campaign?

The criminal case against Singh stems from an incident on October 30, 2025, when Dularchand Yadav was killed during a confrontation between rival groups in Mokama Tal.

Yadav was campaigning in support of Jan Suraaj candidate Piyush Priyadarshi when his supporters allegedly came into conflict with Singh's convoy.

The FIR lodged at Ghoswari police station accuses Singh and his associates of pulling Yadav out of his vehicle, shooting him in the leg and assaulting him before allegedly running him over with an SUV.

Singh has rejected the allegations, describing the incident as a "political conspiracy" by an opponent. He has maintained that Jan Suraaj supporters were responsible for attacking his convoy.

From Beur jail to Assembly victory: Anant Singh's legal battle

Police arrested Singh on November 1, 2025, in connection with Yadav's death and lodged him in Patna's Beur Central Jail.

His detention did not prevent him from contesting the Bihar Assembly elections. Singh went on to retain the Mokama seat as a JD(U) candidate while he was in jail.

The Patna High Court granted him bail on March 19, 2026, allowing him to walk out of prison. However, the relief was challenged before the Supreme Court in October 2026 by Neeraj Kumar, the grandson of Dularchand Yadav.

The Supreme Court has now overturned that bail order, bringing Singh's release to an end and requiring him to surrender by December 1.
